Under the name of “Dawn Porter wird Geisha” (Dawn Porter becomes a Geisha) on Youtube (german): It was the first documentary on Geisha I ever watched and is a good documentary to begin your studies with. It contains interviews with then-Maiko Umechika (Umeno Okiya of Kamishichiken, now a Geiko), Ichisue (retired Geiko of Ichi Okiya of Kamishichiken), Ichiyu (retired Maiko of Ichi Okiya of Kamishichiken) and Katsuno (retired Geiko of Odamoto Okiya of Gion Kobu and bar-proprietress) and informs about the origin of Geisha, the mizuage ceremony, why people today are still fascinated by Geisha-culture and talks about its’ decline. This documentary was produced by the French-German tv-channel Arte. Geisha, le crepuscule des fleurs (Geisha - flower of dawn) (French): Geisha - Blume der Dämmerung (Geisha - Flower of dawn) (German) : part 1: part 2: part 3: part 4: If you have any documentary, long or short, you want to add, please tell me! I’ll put a list of all Geisha-related documentaries I could find here, with it’s languages in brackits (some of the documentaries I’ll list are in German, because German is my mother-tongue). There aren’t that many documentaries about Geisha, but I managed to find a few over the last year when I started learning about Geisha myself. If you are new to the Geisha-world and you want to start learning about it, documentaries are a great way to start!
